JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY

An historically black college, Jackson State University is located in Jackson, Mississippi. Graduates from Jackson State include Walter Payton, former running back for the Chicago Bears, my mother, who was in the Class of 1957, and me!

During Walter Payton's days at JSU (1971-75), Jackson State signs like the one you see here were covered up and replaced with signs that read "Payton's Place".

Did you know that Jackson State, like Kent State, had a demonstration on campus that resulted in death? Phillip Gibbs, a junior at JSU and James Green, a senior at Jackson's Jim Hill High School, were shot down by Jackson Police on May 14, 1970, when they sprayed the campus with bullets. To this day, there are varying accounts of what actually precipitated this incident, but as a result, the graduating class had no Commencement Exercises; their degrees were mailed to them. They were, however, invited to "march" with the Class of 1977, the "Centennial Class"...my class.
